What is a Sexologist?
According to the World Health Organisation (2006), sexual health is a human right and is defined as “a state of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity.”
Sexology is defined as the interdisciplinary and scientific study of human sexuality as well as sexual behaviour, interests and function. A sexologist is a trained professional (generally with a postgraduate degree in sexology) who specialises in the multi-faceted nature of human sexuality. A sexologist is extensively educated in human anatomy, physiology and psychology regarding sexuality.
Sexologist is often utilised interchangeably with sex therapist, however, sexologists are capable of offering many more ways to support individuals and communities. Sexologists don't always go into clinical work, but can also become educators, researchers and activists.
Clinical Sexologists help facilitate their clients with fulfilling their sexual goals. They often assist clients with topics such as sexual functioning, intimacy, healthy and respectful relationships, sexual identity, gender identity, desire, libido, trauma and much more.
Sexologists also abide by a Code of Ethics. I abide by ACA and SAS Code of Ethics which are required by professionals in Australia to honour confidentiality in the therapeutic space as well as the diversity and right sexual health of any individual.
